Market Tips & Tricks for Market Newbies

Tell me a little bit about your biz:

Hello I am Natasha Wells owner and founder of MirCat Hair Accessories which I started 2 years ago when I was looking for hair accessories for my daughter to wear to school. Since then MirCat has come a long way being featured in local newspapers, we can now be found in a few gorgeous online boutiques and hopefully will soon be found in Brick and Mortar Boutique stores. Our range is targeted as being cute and unique accessories for girls for Wedding, Christening, school, footy and every day wear and soon for the ladies as well.

How long have you been doing markets for:

I started doing markets 1.5yrs ago, I still remember my first market I was so nervous and it was at a local School Fete and a huge success. After that I caught the market bug and LOVED doing them.

Presentation tips:

Keep it clean and simple and try and keep your table cloth white and items you use to present your products white or neutral colours as to not take away from your products.

How to get your products noticed and stand out:

You don’t want to have a lot of things on the table otherwise it looks too busy but to little deters people to look. I like to visit the reject shop and other $2 like shops to purchase things such as birdcages, jewellery stands, frames and baskets to help display my products, however leave some stock out on the table to allow people to pick up easily and look at.

stall location in market:

I think location is a big factor in how people purchase your products. I like to be in the centre of the market as I believe it allows people to have a look at some stalls and by the time they get to you they are excited about what they have seen and are ready to buy.

Selling at a market:

Can be lots of fun especially when it is busy as you can talk to customers interact with them which is a big plus if you want them to buy from you. However remember you will have slow market days which can often be a little disheartening.

standing up, sitting down, saying hello not saying hello what works for you ??

I always like to stand up when customers come to me and say hello. I always find if they have kids with them to interact with them helps the customer feel a lot more welcome.

Any other advice you would give a first time market stall holder

Don’t get discouraged if it is a slow day at the market. Remember the next market will probably be a huge success.
